Professor Thomas F. Pettigrew

Thomas F. Pettigrew is currently the Dickson Emeriti Professor of Social Psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He also taught at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (1956-57), Harvard University (1957-1980), and the University of Amsterdam (1986-1991).

He received his B.A. in Psychology from the University of Virginia and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Harvard University. He later received honorary doctorates from Governor’s State University and Germany’s Marburg University.

Professor Pettigrew has published more than 460 books, articles, and reviews that have been cited, according to Google Scholar, more than 57,000 times. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow, a Senior Fulbright Scholar, and a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study, and Stanford University’s Research Institute of Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity. He served as Chair of the Social Psychological Section of the American Sociological Association (ASA) and has won the ASA’s three highest awards for both race relations research and social psychology. Pettigrew also served as president of the Society for the Study of Social Issues (SPSSI) and received its Lewin Award and twice its Allport Intergroup Research Award. The Society for Experimental Social Psychology presented him with both its Distinguished Scientist and Scientific Impact Awards. He has also been honored with six lifetime achievement awards from other psychological and sociological organizations. Finally, Harvard’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences presented Pettigrew with its Centennial Medal for significant contributions to society; and the University of California system gave him its Panunizo Distinguished Emeriti Award.
